One of the best small liberal arts colleges in the West, Whitman’s 77-acre campus is located a few blocks from downtown Walla Walla,  a city with a population of over 30,000.   According to the college web site, “Whitman is the premier liberal arts college that combines academic excellence with an unpretentious Northwest culture and an engaging community.” Whitman offers 45 majors and a number of combined advanced degree programs with other major universities, including education, engineering, oceanography, forestry and environmental management, and law.  All students must pass a comprehensive oral exam in their major in order to graduate. A grant program provides $2100 stipends for students to participate in unpaid summer internships.  The campus is far from any major city but on-campus activities abound. Approximately 39% of the men are members of fraternities; 30% of the women are members of sororities.  Students report that their is no social division between Greeks and non-Greeks. The campus is a short drive from a Regional Airport with two flights a day to Seattle. Students must live on campus the first two years.  In 2009-10, out of 359 degrees awarded, the six most-popular were in:  Social Sciences (87), Biological Sciences (45), Visual and Performing Arts (37), English (29), Physical Sciences (28) and  Psychology(28). College Prowler, the student review web site, gives Whitman’s Campus Dining a grade of B+, Campus Housing a grade of B but Diversity a grade of C+
